Check in with the office and pay and arrange for boat rental if you require one. The park marina has our group name as PHOC. Following the unloading and gear rental we can enjoy a leisurely paddle together. We will paddle for a few hours and just cruise around. Only limit is rentals must be returned by 8:00 pm. Please bring water. The marina has 10 kayaks and gear for rental fee of $12.00. The rentals are on a first come first served basis. Launching your own kayak is fee of $2.00 for senior or $4.00 for non -senior regular fee. PFD is required. Municipal policies regarding the water, and weather temperatures affect the boat rental availability. Hopefully with the later date this year it will not be an issue! All paddling levels are welcome. Please notify me if you are joining the paddle. Cell or email is fine. Following the paddle everyone might want to eat at Jamestown’s restaurants. The Full Moon oyster bar and Southern Roots are both good. However, the Full Moon will not take reservations. I will look forward to enjoying a Friday afternoon paddle together with friends!

Difficulty:

Elevation Gain:

Description:
Please join me for a 12-mile hike on the MST from Cold Prong Lake to Trout Lake. This is a hike along the parkway which include the best parts of the Boone Fork Trail without having to walk thru the picnic area or the camp ground. My understanding is that the parkway is open from 321 to beacon heights so we should not have any problem accessing the trailheads of this hike. The hike starts with a couple of miles thru the woods and up over an open ridge and fields. It then joins the Boone Fork Trail where there are several stream crossings and a brief detour to Hebron Falls. From there we will cross Boone Fork Creek, walk through a pretty open woods filled with ferns and possibly wild flowers, and eventually climb to near the top of Rich Mountain. There are some very nice views looking north and east on the side of Rich Mountain which make it worth the climb. The hike finishes by descending to Trout Lake for a brief walk along the lake to the parking area. The total elevation gain for the hike is approximately 2000 feet. This will be a one way hike so there will be a short car shuttle along the parkway. Let me know if are willing to be a car shuttle driver. Call or email Mike Sprague for details on meet up time and possible carpooling. 12 miles, 2000 ft elev. [R-33]

Description:
At one time, Whitetop Mountain, the 2nd highest peak in VA, was a staple of PHOC, but it dropped out of the rotation and hasn’t been offered for years. I’m going to try to resuscitate it with a shuttle hike there that offers two options. In both cases, half of the cars will be parked at the starting point on County Road 601, and half at Elk Garden. We will then hike from the starting point to Buzzard’s Rock (great view), across Whitetop, and down to Elk Garden Those who want to can continue hiking in the direction of Mt Rogers, and then return to Elk Garden. I will email with hike details the week of the hike. To Elk Garden only: 7 miles, 2000 feet, R-27 To the side of Mount Rogers with return to Elk Garden: 13 miles, 3000 feet, [R-43].

Want to learn to kayak rivers but not confident on flowing water? Join us on June 7th on the Dan River near Hanging Rock SP for an introductory training class on how to paddle rivers. You may have paddled flat water but are not comfortable or lack knowledge on flowing rocky rivers. The Dan is a great place to learn. Experienced PHOC kayakers will provide the knowledge and help you develop the skills needed for rocky flowing rivers. We do not paddle the commonly publicized waterfalls nor Eskimo rolls. You will end the class with knowledge about kayaks, reading the river and avoiding rocks. Safety and rescues will also be covered. The presenters are not licensed instructors but have taken multiple classes and know the ropes. The PHOC paddler group wants to encourage new paddlers to this great sport therefore, boats and equipment will be provided where needed. Contact Joel Deaton to register. The class will be limited to 15 participants. It is best to call Joel for more information.
