Leader: Gale Magann & Lynette Tullos
Description: Join Lynette and me exploring one of our newest national parks in Hopkins, SC about 30 minutes SE of Columbia, SC. We will leisurely
explore old-growth forests with some of the tallest trees in the eastern North America. With luck, we will see river otters, deer, turtles, wading birds and maybe a gator. Hopefully, the mosquitoes and bugs will be gone by then. Camping is possible but it requires some hiking. There are no RV hookups. Cypress View Campground is 45 minutes away and there are hotels in Columbia on the Fort Jackson side of Columbia. Contact me or Lynette for more information.

Description: Let’s return to the Boone Fork Trail at Price Park on the Blue Ridge Parkway. This beautiful 5 mile hike is a club favorite. Although not strenuous with a few uphill sections and gains of about 500’ elevation, this will be a good workout as we encounter numerous stream crossings, rocks, roots, muddy and wet paths, and the opportunity to climb a few ladders. This is considered an easy-to- moderate hike fir EXPERIENCED hikers and not a walk in the park. Bring poles, sturdy and appropriate footwear, water and a few snacks. Plan on getting your shoes wet. After the hike, there will be an option to stop for icecream or fudge at Kilwins in Blowing Rock. Contact me for details about the meet-up time and carpooling.

Description: Please join me for a relaxing late autumn paddle down the Dan River - hopefully before the weather gets too cold. This sensationally scenic paddle route will have us paddling through the beautiful Stokes County countryside and by the riveting river bluffs near Hanging Rock State Park. Depending on how many paddlers we have, we can choose one of two options of either a smaller paddle (5-7 miles) by scheduling an appointment with the DRC and having them shuttle us to their private put-in, or we may opt for a longer paddle (12.9 miles; provided we have enough cars to run our own shuttle), putting in at Hart's Access and taking out at the Hanging Rock Access. A final decision will be made after we see how many paddlers are interested. While the paddle is beginner friendly, registrants should have basic kayaking knowledge and be prepared for Class I rapids.

    Leader: Nicole Mazgaj
    Distance: 13 miles
    Difficulty: R-28, Moderate
    Elevation Gain: 1,500 ft.
Description: As many of you know, the Birkhead Wilderness is best hiked in the winter. This is the time of year when we can enjoy large unobstructed vistas into beautifully haunting woods, relatively low elevation that keeps the temperatures pleasantly warm, and the mild challenge of a couple of stream crossings. And all of this without having to put up with the annoyance of ticks, snakes, and gnats, or suffocating heat. Please note that, although the loop from the Robbins Branch Parking lot is only 7 miles, I plan to add a bit more mileage by venturing out on the side loop off the Birkhead Mountain Trail that will take us to a couple of the camping sites. Even though this is considered a moderate hike by experienced hikers, the added mileage off the loop, with a couple of steep descents, makes it unsuitable for beginners. Please register online NO LATER THAN 6:00 pm on Thursday November 20. I will promptly get back to you with carpooling and meeting options, and I will send a confirming email to all participants, by 12:00 pm on Friday.

Description: Please join me on what used to be a less strenuous version of Stone Mountain Backcountry, but has not been offered since December of 2022 due to the closure of the Blue Ridge Parkway. With the parkway open, we can now access this trailhead. Our journey begins on the Blue Ridge Parkway, near the Bullhead Mountain Overlook and will take us on a comprehensive tour of Mahogany Rock Mountain, the MST toward Stone Mountain, and then back up a suggested trail where we will visit the haunting ruins of an old chairlift station that used to run up and down the escarpment; the vestiges of someone's dream. To get a few extra miles, we will hike out to Devil's Garden Overlook where we will witness a spectacularly sweeping scene of the Blue Ridge Escarpment, the Yadkin Valley and the Brushy Mountains before returning back towards our cars via the MST, forming a delightful "lollipop" loop. 7.4 miles, 1417ft elev. gain [R-22]

Description: Please join me for a winter-wonder trip across the Shining Rock Wilderness area, near Canton, NC. This area boasts a quartz rock so large that it can be seen from space and plays home to the illustrious Cold Mountain, popularized by the novel by Charles Fraizer and the movie. Aside from these awesome sites, this area is resplendent with lush evergreens and some of the most awe-inspiring views in southwestern North Carolina. Our itinerary will be as follows: Day 1: Depart from the Shining Rock Trailhead to the Shining Rock Campground where we will make a basecamp (6 miles; 2493ft elev. gain). Day 2: Using day packs, we will depart basecamp and do a day-hike out to Cold Mountain and return to basecamp (10.8 miles; 2497ft elev. gain). Day 3: Depart Shining Rock Campground back to our cars. (6 miles; 36ft elev. gain) I would not consider this a beginner backpacking trip and would recommend at least intermediate experience with backpacking, as the hikes feature strenuous ascents, long miles, technical scrambles with full exposure in some places. On the return home, I’d like to offer a social hour/luncheon at Sierra Nevada Brewery for those who are inclined to join me.

Description: A frew of us have become very partial to hiking on trails, marked or unmarked, along the southern boundary of Stone Mountain State park, where we are left to our own PHOC devices away from the better behaved crowds. And the park’s easy access from the Triad is ideal for winter outings, even when snow or ice might deter us from more isolated areas. The planned route will take us on bridle trails, past abandoned still mills, across a couple of streams, an old cemetery, down an out-of-the way connector trail, and on a sustained climb on Black Jack. This is a very moderate hike for experienced hikers, and also suitable for all those who have had some experience with mountain hiking. Please register online NO LATER THAN 6:00 pm on Thursday December 18. I will promptly get back to you with carpooling and meeting logistics, and I will send a confirmation email to all participants by 12:00 pm on Friday the 19th.
